TREASURERS REPORT was posted on the wall by Treasurer Paul, K3NON. A lot of money was spent in the clubhouse this past month or two, mostly on the kitchen. We still need to have the water checked to make sure its okay. Motion submitted for acceptance of the report, seconded and accepted.
SECRETARYS REPORT was posted on the wall by Secretary Paul, WN4AMO: Motion submitted for acceptance of the report, seconded and accepted.
ENGINEERS REPORT:
ARES/RACES: We recently had an ARES exercise and someone sent us a nasty e-mail about the testing. Paul read the e-mail. Essentially, it was an e-mail from a disgruntled listener who felt our changing frequencies was secretive and childish. General agreement was that the way we operate the net does not violate FCC rules (as suggested by the reader). We are not hiding anything, merely using communication techniques that save time and effort. Consensus was that the e-mail does not warrant a response.
Rick, N7WE made comments about the recent ARES drill and thanked those present for their participation.
He felt there was a lot of learning that took place with people getting education about how to program their radios and what to program them for (for ARES). He felt the drill overall was very worthwhile. A couple of problems with one of the repeaters was also discovered.
The IS 700 class will be June 5 starting at 7:30 AM here at the clubhouse. This Thursday is our regular ARES meeting. New information about changes taking place in Lake County emergency management.
Its almost hurricane season! We, as amateurs particularly, need to be aware more than ever of what we need to be prepared for food, water, supplies, etc.
Wednesday and Thursday the state held its hurricane exercise. It was somewhat unattended by the state officials because of the huge oil spill off the Louisiana coast. The test was a simulation of both a day shift and a night shift. The exercise typically takes an historic storm, plots it and identifies the steps that would be taken were that a real emergency. During these tests, particular emphasis is made for Tampa and Miami, as these are the locations where huge fuel depots for the state are off loaded and distributed.
HAMFEST REPORT:
QCWA: John, W8KCE made brief comments about QCWA and operation on the repeater they normally use. They are now using Echo-Link again no more meetings until September. Theyre still having their Tuesday evening nets on 147.225. Side note the 39 machine was kicked off the tower where theyre located. Club members are still looking for a new site for the repeater.
FOX HUNTING:
FIELD DAY: Update by Steve, KT4Q coming up in about 6 weeks. For the benefit of new people and guests, Steve gave a synopsis of what Field Day is all about. Its now confirmed we will be at the Bragg Center, off Lane Park Road, south of Tavares. This is the facility the county uses for various training purposes, including fire-fighting. Irv, KB1E, is going to conduct a brief training class on the logging software, N1MM Logger. Ted, K1AYZ, will be notified when we would like to provide access for the public, so he can have the appropriate press notice made.

ARES/RACES: Next Event: March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon April 24; thanks to all the volunteers for Ibini Tera: LCARES will partner with Sarasota Amateur Communications Service; ARES logo being finalized. Irv (KB1E) made reference to waiting for the tail to drop when using the cross-ref repeater. Doug also pointed out that on the dual-mode repeaters, make sure you have the proper tone on both receive and transmit, otherwise youll hear garbage on one of the modes.
Paul, K3NON, volunteered to be the organizer/coordinator for our club for the March of Dimes event. Paul, K3NON, said the section manager showed up at the recent ARES meeting this past Thursday night.
HAMFEST REPORT: November Hamfest has been approved as an ARRL Hamfest
QCWA: Meeting at Haystacks at noon (Saturdays), continue to hold weekly net 7:30 PM 145.39 Roger, W9JRY, said one of the national directors was present at their last gathering. He had visited an antique radio museum and had a slide show presentation. Net has been fairly active, but noted that echo-link has been removed and there was a glitch with the repeater they use. Paul, K3NON noted that the node has been recently changed.
FOX HUNTING:
FIELD DAY: Ken (N9KS): Trying to get Bragg Center as QTH should be locked down within 1 2 weeks; each Saturday meeting from now on will be devoted to working on various items to be used at Field Day. Question was asked about any need for a rider on our insurance. Doug said were trying to avoid that and trying to get everyone to look at it as a county exercise/drill instead of an event. Next month we plan to build a couple of antennas for the higher bands (10 and 15 meters) so well have extra antennas available other than multi-band beams.
DXING/CONTESTING:
10-10 Int. Mobile Contest 0001Z-2359Z, Mar 20
CQ WW WPX Contest, SSB 0000Z, Mar 27 to 2400Z, Mar 28
Florida QSO Party 1600Z, Apr 24 to 2159Z, Apr 25
It was noted that Steve, KT4Q, plans to operate the FLA QSO Party from the club house. Irv said it might be a good idea to come by after the March of Dimes event and take a peek at how N1MM operates, as thats the same program well be using during Field Day.
OLD BUSINESS: Still some work parties that need to be done, but theyve been on hold as Doug and Al have both been very busy. The TECH class has been put off until June due to lack of time for organizing and locking down the facility for the class.
NEW BUSINESS: HP0/K1AYZ and HP0/K8BBT both recently operated MM (Mobile Maritime) on a cruise. There were 25 other hams on the cruise with a couple of HF stations set up on the fantail of the ship. They operated CW, AMTOR, SSB and PSK31, running IC-7000s with screwdriver antennas mounted one deck up. It was organized by a group of hams out of Virginia with the assistance of the engineering staff of the cruise ship. Ted, K1AYZ, plans to write this event up for one of the ham publications.
Several officers will be at Dayton for the HamVention, which coincides with our scheduled May meeting. Well probably have to cobble together a meeting with some of the board members as Paul, K3NON will be virtually the only officer present.
Paul, K3NON would like to have the names of the volunteers for the March of Dimes event, KB1E, K8BBT, N9KS, K1AYZ, W2GGC. The volunteer group will have the clubs trailer for this event.
Ted, K1AYZ, noted that the Royal Harbor amateur group is getting ready to start a 10 meter net.
Frequency will be 28450 on Wednesday evenings it will come on later in the evening so it wont conflict with the regular 7 PM ARES net.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Irv, KB1E is back with us. He says all the parts he still has are still working!
ELMER SESSION: We have a new router in the club house. Who is entitled to use it? Paul said its available to anyone who can read it! Doug, K4AC, gave a brief description of PropNet, with the PSK31 beacons.
Chuck, KI4HJH, has a Kantronics device hes having problems with. From his description, Irv, KB1E, suspected he needs to address the KISS mode, where it appears to be switching off automatically from that mode.
