dues. Brad WZ0O, 1st reading. Hes already
paid his dues!
QCWA: Roger (W9JRY) for the
first time in about ten years hes not going to be president.
Al K2SSE will be president. We need to find someone to host our
echo-link for our repeater. Paul (K3NON) said the echo-link died,
but were still working on it. We plan to apply for five IP
addresses from Comcast. If it works with static addresses, well
be in good shape. The bad news is the IP addresses will cost us $5
per month. The club would like for the QCWA to kick in half the
annual cost if the static addresses work properly. If the
addresses work properly, it will be brought before the board of
directors for expense approval. Mike (W8EHH) said if he could
have K2SSE loan him some equipment, he could get the echo-link
back up. 145.39 is the frequency for our Tuesday night nets. With
the loss of echo-link, weve lost about half our net
participation. Roger thanked Mike (W8EHH) for his efforts over
the years with the echo-link. 15th is the next meeting
at Haystacks in Eustis 12 noon.
OLD BUSINESS: Tower sold, but owner hasnt yet picked it up. Kudos to Lenny (KD4MBN) who donated the tower and Paul (WN4AMO) who got it sold.

Club recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
Introduction of members and guests Melissa, whos been here several times before.
TREASURERS REPORT was read by Treasurer Paul, K3NON. Motion submitted for acceptance of the report, seconded and accepted.
SECRETARYs report for October by Secretary Art N4PJ: minutes from meeting read and accepted.
ENGINEERS REPORT: No engineers report this evening.
ARES/RACES: Strait (KT4YA) weve ordered our trailer, but on hold pending arrival of the generator. Maybe another two weeks before the generator is in place. We should have the trailer in our possession by Thanksgiving.
Al (W4ALR) noted that we had two events recently the Mt. Dora Bike Fest and the Triathlon in Clermont.
HAMFEST REPORT: Dave (KR4OW) 301 Ward Street, Eustis, 8 AM, 147.255 talk-in frequency. Were virtually assured of having our hamfest on the same weekend next year. Thanks to Irv (KB1E) and some of the other ARES guys, we will have some help with the parking. Deposit already made for the building we have the facility until 3 PM.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: KG4NQM Jerry, this is his first reading. He was a member years before and is re-applying. Steve (KT4Q) this is his second reading. Steve was voted in, contingent upon paying his dues.
QCWA: John (W8KCE) last meeting was a little lean since many of our members were out working events. Were still having troubles with the echo-link on the 39 machine. Next meeting is on the 17th at Haystacks.
OLD BUSINESS: Nov 24th 8 AM Fox Hunt postponed from an earlier date.
Al (W4ALR) noted that out tower for sale is still out there and the grass is growing around it. Paul (WN4AMO) suggested we take one of the sections and pictures of the tower to the Orlando Hamcation in February. Jim (NS1L) suggested it be advertised on QTH.COM, but Paul said its already been on there for two months. The other potential buyer said he had originally hoped to resell it, but the other buyer backed out and the whole deal fell through. We were asking $3,000 for it, but we would likely take less. The trailer that Paul will have the tower section on has additional room on it if people have stuff that needs to be transported to the Orlando Hamcation. If theres someone who has space at the Hamcation, we could use the assistance to get the trailer with the tower section into the parking lot.
Paul (K3NON) said echo-link via the club repeater appears to be working quite well. Strait (KT4YA) said hes been making contacts with it as well. 347254 is the node for our echo-link.
NEW BUSINESS: A repeater in the Daytona area was apparently interfering with one of our repeaters. Paul (K3NON) reported it to the Repeater Council and its apparently in the chain of command. Paul cautioned that we should not assume a band opening is interference. Theres not much we can do about a big 2-meter opening.
SUNSHINE REPORT:

Something is apparently wrong with the controller. Irv is going to take a look at it. Al thanked Mike (WD9EXH) for the use of his laser equipment. He also thanked Lenny for getting and installing the lights.
Another fox hunt coming up at Hickory Point. October 20th in the morning.
Were not participating in JOTA this month because of lack of response from the Boy Scouts.
We are almost finished with the 10-meter repeater. The antenna has been installed (29.68 output and 29.58 input). Not up to 100% yet.
Use* + node number to connect, # to disconnect on the EchoLink node. Another way to connect is C followed by the station callsign youre calling.
NEW BUSINESS: Doug (K4AC) talked about the board meeting held recently. The co-location of the 10 meter repeater was approved. There was discussion about the sale of the tower. We discussed the ARRL affiliation and discovered that the club was once connected but the League apparently said we still have to go through the normal process. Modification of the by-laws was also discussed.
Copies of the current and proposed by-laws were passed out for discussion.
Motion was made to accept the proposed by-law changes. Unanimously approved.

meeting of the season September 15th at 11:30 at
Haystacks restaurant (in Eustis). The new location will allow us
to have programs. 145.39 machine has the net on Tuesday nights at
7:30 PM.
OLD BUSINESS: Al (W4ALR) said were connecting the UHF repeater to EchoLink. Were just getting started with little or no cost to the club. But we do need to buy an EchoLink controller for $89. Were looking for contributions to finance the controller.
Ceiling Paul and John have started the project. The wire is quite stiff and difficult to work with. They need some assistance, particularly from people with experience in this kind of work. Dick (AF4OR) and Ron (KE4WBI) volunteered to assist. Mike (WD9EXH) loaned us his laser alignment equipment for the project.
Tower this Saturday morning were going to repossess the tower we thought had been sold. We had planned to take it to WN4AMOs property, but that plan has changed. Dave (KR4OW) said we could bring it to his house for the time being, as long as we put it up on some kind of blocks.
Volunteers please, were meeting at Sunrise Grill in Tavares at 7 AM. Dave (KR4OW) asked if we could advertise it on eBay. Paul (WN4AMO) is pursuing that already.
Chuck (N4CMJ) said the Fox Hunt went well. It went so well, we did it twice. Had some difficulty getting the Boy Scouts involved. Hes made some more contacts, but not having much success. He suggested that maybe we should drop our attempts at Scout involvement, at least for the time being. There were 13 people who showed up for the Fox Hunt.
ARRL Doug (K4AC) did some research. The club has 69% ARRL members. He has contacted the League club representative. Apparently LARA has never been previously affiliated with the ARRL. It will take about four to six weeks to effect the affiliation.
Next testing scheduled for September 15 and there will be a board meeting immediately following the testing.
NEW BUSINESS: Paul (WN4AMO) has requested approval from the board of directors to erect a 10-meter repeater on the club site. This will be discussed at the next board meeting.
Al (W4ALR) said we plan to install anchors for our storm shutters. We need members to donate panels (steel hurricane panels) to the club they are typically about $17 a panel and the best place to buy them is Lowes and Home Depot. They need to be 57 panels and we need 18 of them.
Doug (K4AC) has done some investigation for contents insurance. We can pay $75 annually to insure up to $5,000 worth of contents. Motion was submitted and seconded to purchase the contents insurance.
Al ( W4ALR) asked if anyone had ideas for programs or presentations to spice up our meetings. Doug (K4AC) volunteered to do a presentation on grounding. Jules (W1GDE) also has an historical presentation available.
Al (W4ALR) said we also need to start thinking about elections. We need to appoint a nominating committee to start the process. Dave (W4IJI) asked if the committee could be picked/appointed at the board meeting on the 15th.
Dave (KR4OW) pointed out that we should be recycling our cans instead of just throwing them in the trash.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Dave (W4IJI) said he was out shopping and some young man made an apparently illegal turn and smashed Daves car. His wife had a compressed spinal fracture and Dave had a whiplash.
ELMER SESSION: Strait (KT4YA) said he has a radio desk for a very reasonable price. He also has the phone number of a guy who has a Hammarlund HQ-170A in very good shape for sale.

A committee has been formed to decide the next vehicle to
purchase in replacement of the red trailer. Strait said a full
report will submitted to the next ARES gathering.
A full-blown emergency management exercise
took place recently in Clermont. It was a terrorist-activity
related exercise. The practice also involved a gunshot into a
chlorine tank, complicating matters significantly. Approximately
25 people were involved in the EOC.

MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS:
QCWA: Still summer, theyre
resting until the 3rd Saturday in September. Tuesday
nights at 7:30 on 145.39 theyre still having a net.
OLD BUSINESS: Paul (K3NON) said the Comcast cable routing was not satisfactory and he ended up climbing part way up the tower and put a strain relief on the coax.
Chuck (N4CMJ) said JOTA is not set up yet. The Fox Hunt is going to be August 18 at Hickory Point at 8:30 AM.
Paul (WN4AMO) has been accumulating tower sections. He recently became aware that someone purchased some tower parts on credit and has never paid up. Doug said the board is aware of the problem and is trying to pursue the issue.
Dave (KR4OW) pointed out that he has some magnetic signs for those who ordered them.
NEW BUSINESS: It was noted that ARES has a net every evening. Notices of meetings and any pertinent information could be put on the net. Mike (W8EHH) pointed out that the repeater already makes announcements about both the LARA and ARES meeting schedules.
Paul (K3NON) said there will not be any testing during the month of August.
There was an impromptu board meeting to
resolve an insurance issue. We have five board members present
which constitutes a quorum. Our previous insurance company is
pulling out of
Paul (WN4AMO) pointed out that our club should also have insurance for our board of directors.
Mike (W8EHH) submitted a motion that the board conduct a study of the possibility of becoming an ARRL club and getting whatever benefits, including but not limited to insurance, the club could receive. Art (N4PJ) seconded the motion.
Doug pointed out some of the benefits the club receives by virtue of being an ARRL-affiliated club. We get a small kickback to the club when a member renews through the club. We get officially listed on the ARRL website. Paul (WN4AMO) thinks we also pick up some hamfest insurance. Numerous publications and presentations are available including training information
A motion was made that the club affiliate itself with the ARRL. Motion was seconded. A vote was taken with the result of 22 in favor and 2 against. Mike (W8EHH) said he would like to see someone investigate us being a special service club.
Doug pointed out the treasury is in a tight bind. If anyone would like to make a donation to LARA, it would be most appreciated. Donations are tax deductible.
Doug asked if there was anyone who had any experience in hanging the kind of ceiling were going to hang.
Mike (WD9EXH) is willing to loan us his laser equipment.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Lenny had hip surgery and is apparently home doing well. He went to the doctor today to have the staples removed.

currently inactive.
OLD BUSINESS: Paul (K3NON) says the telephone is now disconnected. ComCast has installed basic cable TV and an internet modem. A work party did some serious tree trimming to help the cable people gain access to the building. We had to route the cable through the tower to gain a reasonable height. The installation is temporary until we get the ceiling rebuilt. John (W8KCE) said we should probably have a strain relief instead of routing it through the tower. Paul (K3NON) is going to donate some money to defray the cost.
Chuck (N4CMJ) were having another meeting Saturday 10 AM about JOTA and the Fox Hunt. We need to see if we have enough people interested.
Ken (N9KS) said he didnt have full details yet. The CW station made 835 QSOs, SSB 336 and the digital 46. We obliterated what we did last year. Doug (K4AC) offered thanks to everyone who provided equipment and support for Field Day. Ken said we ended up missing an adapter for coax to F-cable and a Craftsman wrench. Strait (KT4YA) provided breakfast Sunday morning. Weve been creating a problem list of things to improve on for next years Field Day. Doug (K4AC) pointed out that were going to try to run a few contests from the club to help mentor/train other operators in both software and operating skills. Next year we hope to be able to run either 3A or 4A a full-time CW station, a serious SSB/digital station and a social SSB station.
Weve received a non-refundable $2,000 deposit on the red trailer. The purchaser is supposed to be here tomorrow to inspect the trailer and pay the remaining $16,000. Worst case is we dont sell it and hes out the $2,000, but were anticipating selling it tomorrow.
NEW BUSINESS: Dave (KR4OW) at the last meeting Al pointed out that we needed some additional funds to get through to the end of the year. Can we rent out building out to other organizations for meetings. Doug (K4AC) pointed out that the insurance would change if were renting it to others. We have security through obscurity. If we make it too well-known through other services, we become more visible. From a tax perspective, we have no serious liability unless we can get to or exceed $25,000 annual income. Doug suggested we put it up for discussion at the next board meeting.
Paul (K3NON) does anyone know much about blinds and drapes? We need something to cover up the windows. We can apparently buy some pretty inexpensive blinds at WalMart. Some kind of solar film could also be used.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Carl (K8BBT) said he heard from Irv (KB1E) that his son was doing better.
ELMER SESSION: Dave (KR4OW) said he found some aluminum tubing available out of state for his home-brew screwdriver antenna.

on 255 but it mysteriously started working again and has been

ARES/RACES: Irv (KB1E) weve
had a number of simulations this month, including a hurricane
drill. The county has a new online documentation system,
replacing their old, antiquated system. There was also a
simulation of a high-school shootout. ARES was listed as being up
and active, but its very different than other disasters
where they would already know where hams are located. Tomorrow is

this is an expense as well, but we hope we can get a return. Doug
(K4DDR) is going to head up that project. We hope to gain info
for both ARES and LARA by mailing all the hams in
The subject of the telephone came up again at the board meeting. Were spending $42 a month, essentially for nothing. The rate for internet service is more than were spending on the phone, but were opening the door for a lot of other things beneficial to our club. Weve had members offer to chip in the difference for shortcomings between the current bill and the additional cost of having an internet service. We would have cable TV here when someone is here during emergencies. WinLink, Voice over Internet, Packet, etc. (various digital modes), cluster access during contests. Darrell (WB3CIU) pointed out that Comcast typically only has about a four-hour window during an emergency in the event of a hurricane we would likely have no internet service at all. Herb (KF4WW) pointed out that if we had DSL, its possible we could lose internet service but still have phone backup. Strait (KT4YA) pointed out that maybe we could negotiate with the county for some kind of concession as we provide community service.
NEW BUSINESS: Were going to take another stab at JOTA. Chuck (N4CMJ) is going to see about organizing a Fox Hunt, in an attempt to get some young people involved in amateur radio. We need some people willing to loan HTs for the project. We hope to have this in the fall the time frame has not yet been set.
Al (W4ALR) asked if we could schedule June 16th for the day to retighten the tower guys here at the clubhouse.
Paul (WN4AMO) Astor has provided a utility pole for us. Paul needs someone with a bucket truck or something similar so we can get up the pole.

ARES/RACES: Irv (KB1E) a new VHF
repeater is going to be installed on the water tower in Astor.
April 28th was the annual March
of Dimes in Tavares. Everything went very well. Net operations
were recorded so we will be able to critique and learn from this
operation.
HAMFEST REPORT:
Al (W4ALR) said Dave (KR4OW) sent him a letter from the ARRL. The
SE Division Director has approved our hamfest. Were now an
official hamfest, whatever that means. Perhaps more publicity.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: Brooks
Oliver and Charlie Craft have still not returned to the club, so
well continue to hold their applications. John Bernard (N1KUB)
just brought up his new station and is interested in
satellite and many other facets. This is his first reading.
Bill Kessinger (KE3A) 2nd reading. HF and DXer. He was voted in approved upon dues payment.
QCWA: John (W8KCE) there is one more meeting before summer break. 3rd Saturday at noon at Barnhills.
OLD BUSINESS: Al (W4ALR) said were making good progress on the clubhouse, but there is still more to be done. Ceiling needs to be removed and properly insulated. Maybe new light fixtures as well. Much can be done on our own, we can get quotes for those items we cant do by ourselves.
Our ceiling tiles are apparently NOT asbestos.
Dave (KD4IOS) used to be a cartoonist. He has some old cartoons he drew and wanted to get club approval before he mounted them in the clubhouse. Al (W4ALR) said we can talk about it in depth at the next board meeting.

NEW BUSINESS: N4FLA APRS digipeater is down. The radio apparently burned up. Paul (WN4AMO) said he would let Mike (W8EHH) know.
The 19th will be a testing session and a board of directors meeting following the test session.
Paul (K3NON) we are now paying almost $42 monthly for phone service and we dont use it very much. Would the club be better off with high-speed internet instead of the phone? A cable modem from Comcast would cost around $55 monthly and open up a new spectrum. The auto patch used to get quite a bit of use, but not for the last few years. Question was asked if there could be legal problems if there was an emergency and a phone was not available. The consensus is that we have adequate radios here and not to come to the building unattended. Irv asked what the difference would be if we went to DSL and had both phone and internet. What benefits can we as amateurs gain from internet access. We can add echolink to one of the existing repeaters. Numerous complaints were voiced that adding echolink to the repeater might not be a good idea. Details need to be researched as to exact costs. Would Comcast give us a price break as a community service? Further discussion will ensue at the next board meeting.
Dave (KR4OW) said we should send out
postcards to hams in the area about our hamfest and our club
meetings. Doug (K4DDR) has done some research on local hams.
There are apparently around 900 hams in

ENGINEERS REPORT: Lenny sent a remote report via Strait everythings working! Packet is also working again.
ARES/RACES: Irv (KB1E) - The red trailer and tractor are still at Lennys house. Had a bit, but it fell through. Were going to try eBAY next. We had a hands-on packet session this past weekend. The next workshop will be about APRS.
The new computer is working and there are two internet accounts available.
The red trailer has two white boards. We might consider removing one of them and putting it in the clubhouse.
Hurricane season coming up. Roster needs to be updated appropriately. Strait pointed out that each member should check the web site and make sure their e-mail data is correct.
HAMFEST REPORT: Dave (KR4OW) says were well advertised. We also got lucky and got the date of our hamfest published prior to Titusville, so theyll have to suffer through what we did in the past. Dave needs to know if were planning on doing any testing during the hamfest. Dave says he needs help for HF coverage. K4YBB (who passed away very recently) was covering this in the past.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: Brooks Oliver and Charlie Croft not present and not yet paid. Al (W4ALR) said well hold them temporarily. Wayne (WY4F) 2nd reading. Voted in as his dues are already paid. Ric Butts (AI4LG) this is also his 2nd reading. Voted in as his dues are also paid. Bill (KE3A) primary interest is HF (hes a DXer!) and lives in Mt. Dora. This is his first reading. Moved here from northern Virginia. His landlord has given permission for a tower.
QCWA: John (W8KCE) not sure whether April will be the last month to meet before summer break or if theyll meet in May. Saturday the 21st at Barnhills is the next scheduled luncheon/meeting.
OLD BUSINESS: Z88 - Christian Radio Club these guys seem to have dropped us like a hot potato. They apparently have secured a site on Sugarloaf Mountain. They may have some additional tower problems elsewhere and may approach us later. But, for the moment, it appears to be a dead issue.
Work party this Saturday for the clubhouse. Lenny is going to run the pressure washer. We need some volunteers to clean and paint. Plan on starting around 7 so we can try to be gone by noon.
NEW BUSINESS: Strait (KT4YA) has a couple of CW paddle kits that used to belong to Jim (K4YBB). The paddles are made of guitar picks, the hardware looks like brass or bronze. They were originally in the $25 to $30 range. They were sold to Len (W2LG) and Ted (K1AYZ) for $15 each. They are officially known as Scorpion bugs. Strait said hes taken in approximately $800 for items from Jims estate.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Jim (K4YBB) became a silent key this past month. He will be missed.
ELMER SESSION: Yaesu FL2100B amp how can it be changed from 115 to 240? Dave (KR4OW) offered advice.
Strait pointed out that we still have members having problems with packet. Al wanted to know if we can move out packet operation from the 07 machine back to the 01 machine. The opportunities for rag-chewing are getting less and less because of all the other activity going on. If we do move it, we need to provide advance notice.
Herb (KF4WW) is interested in trying FM PSK on 145.6 MHz (an experimental channel) if anyone is interested.

SECRETARY report for February by Secretary Art N4PJ: minutes from meeting read and accepted.
TREASURERS REPORT was read by Treasurer Paul, K3NON: Someone questioned why the utility bill was so low this past month. Perhaps the cooler weather? Paul (WN4AMO) also asked why we had a telephone in the clubhouse. Its for autopatch use and during bad weather someone is here in case of an emergency.
Motion submitted for acceptance of the report, seconded and accepted.
ENGINEERS REPORT: Packet machine not working properly, everything else is fine. Climate control in the facility is no problem with the current cool weather. Dave (KR4OW) has some sheet metal if we need additional covering for our equipment facility. Ron (KE4WBI) asked about additional insulation. Al (W4ALR) pointed out some of the new things and repairs that have been done to the clubhouse. There are still a few more items to be accomplished. The next major item is to pressure wash and paint the building. Lenny (KD4MBN) pointed out that the guy poles need some maintenance as well.
ARES/RACES: Irv was in Boston and discovered his hometown was on the national news because of the tornado. Weather bureau guy (Dennis Decker) was present at the last meeting. We still have some problems as to what we should be looking at if were on alert for a tornado. The ARES group meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month here at the clubhouse.
HAMFEST REPORT: Last weekend of March (the 31st) will be our tailgate here at the clubhouse. Dave (KR4OW) said well stay open as long as theres still someone here wanting to sell something. Irv (KB1E) said the N4FLA website is currently showing an incorrect date for the tailgate. Irv said were also planning a digital workshop on that weekend.

NEW BUSINESS: Paul (WN4AMO) brought in a 2-channel commercial radio that has been programmed for digital use. Mike (W8EHH) wired several up and is selling them for $35 each.
Irv said the upcoming digital workshop will also have some emphasis on packet and APRS.
Paul (K3NON) offered thanks to The Villages radio club who donated a computer to a family with five children who are now enormously happy. The PC was donated by K4ROT. K4ROT said he is prepared to donate another one.
SUNSHINE REPORT: Roger (W9JRY) just recently received a pacemaker. Hes apparently at home now, doing fine.

ARES/RACES: Irv (KB1E) had to leave town but expects to be back in time for the next ARES meeting in Tavares. There will be a presentation about SkyWarn. John (WB4HV) pointed out that county background checks for emergency management participation do not include financial information.
HAMFEST REPORT: Dave (KR4OW) said he had to resubmit the info to the ARRL as they still have the info incorrect.
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS:
Charlie Croft from Umatilla hes been in CB a long time and wants to move into amateur radio. This is his first reading.
Brooks Oliver been impressed by hams hes met and wants to join. This is his first reading.
Darrell Frantz (WB3CIU) from Howey. Lived in different parts of the state. Got back into amateur radio because he gained some space in his house and his grandson also wants to get into amateur radio. His grandson needs to learn Morse code to get a Boy Scout merit badge. This is his first reading.
Gene Baker (W6BG) likes SSB on 12, 17 and 20, lives in Mt. Dora. This is his second reading. He was voted in as a member (dues are already paid).
Art Duser (KF4ZAJ) also from Mt. Dora lots of varied interest. This is second reading. He was also vote in. Once he pays his dues, hell be a full member.
Pete Pisano (KI4RQS) from Clermont. This is Petes second reading. Voted in, but still needs to pay dues.
QCWA: Al (K2SSE) said they had a great luncheon meeting and a good response on the net check-in. Al said theyre the only QCWA chapter in the U.S. with echolink capability.
OLD BUSINESS: Al (W4ALR) said Chuck (N4CMJ) needs some help with the past presidents and silent key boards.
Carl (K8BBT) asked when were going to do the work on the clubhouse. Al (W4ALR) said he has a guy lined up to do the blocks for the windows. Since hes doing it for free, Al doesnt want to hassle the guy too much. We also need to look at adding some insulation under our roof as our utility bills have been rather high. If theres any asbestos involved we need special handling.
NEW BUSINESS: This month it was decided to move testing to the 4th Saturday because February 23, the CW testing requirement is going to be eliminated. This will eliminate some double testing from potential candidates. The test will be on the 24th at 9 AM.
A Hammarlund HQ-110 was donated by a winter visitor. It apparently either doesnt work or is very intermittent. Radio was bought by Mike (WD9EXH) for $40.
Ken (N9KS) is going to run Field Day again this year. He made a reservation for Lake IdaMere park again this year. Were just starting to formulate plans for this years event. We would like to have someone cook this year. We were never able to get anything going last year. Al pointed out that we no longer have the red trailer available. We have no insurance or tag for it and will likely be sold by the time we get to Field Day. A potential goal is to see if we can improve our class performance. We did well last year and would like to see if we can improve.
Bob (K4ROT) donated a newer computer to the club with Windows 2000, a new monitor and a new printer. There are plans to network the two existing computers.
The club has been approached by Z88, a local Christian broadcast radio. Were looking at the possibility of locating a low-power repeater on our tower for them. The board of directors discussed it a couple of weeks ago. Were willing to accommodate them if we can lease space to them at a fair price. They are currently working on a lease agreement to present to us. Al and Lenny have both met with the engineer for Z88. We can also provide emergency power for them as part of the lease agreement. Were hoping we can get enough from the lease to meet our monthly expenses. Were also hoping we can have share the internet access they will provide with their facilities. Both organizations are tax exempt, so we anticipate no changes both legally and financially.
Paul started a list of Silent Keys to go on the board. If you know someone who is a Silent Key who is not already on the list, please provide the appropriate information.
Al wanted to remind everyone were well into the new year. If you havent yet paid your dues, please do so. We rely heavily on the dues to meet our expenses.

ENGINEERS REPORT: Short and sweet its still working.
ARES/RACES: Strait (KT4YA) 3rd Thursday of each month. Weve been having 18 to 20 people at our meetings. Registration with county services is required! Since 9/11 were having to toe a little different line and follow some new rules. Recently had a tornado, so we may be in that particular cycle.
HAMFEST REPORT:
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS: Jeff Brown (N4BOU) second reading. Lives in Leesburg and interested in all facets of amateur radio. Dues are paid hes in.
Don Boston (AG4VK) likes 40 meters. Dues paid hes in!
Pete KI4AQS from Clermont first reading interests are 2 meters, 440 and HF. Not present this evening.
Eugene Baker W6BG Mt. Dora. Went to radio school in the service, first licensed in 1946 and been enjoying ham radio since.
Art Duser KF4ZAJ Mt. Dora, 1st ticket in 1962 in Largo. Moved into the area recently.
QCWA: Roger (W9JRY) QCWA is alive and well. We look old, but were doing well. Third Saturday of each month at noon at Barnhills. No ones died yet of ptomaine poisoning. Were always looking for more members. If you were licensed on or before 1982 youre eligible.
OLD BUSINESS: Strait (KT4YA) pointed out that our meeting schedule shows up in the newspaper and he got a few calls today about directions to the meeting. Al (W4ALR) said he is also getting calls because of the newspaper. He thanked Doug (K4DDR) for his donation of the web services.
NEW BUSINESS: Dave (KR4OW) is going to take on the hamfest again this year. The list recently sent out from the ARRL shows our hamfest as Sorrento. Dave said thats a default list that is sent out every year.
A comment was made that we need a bigger parking lot. Some of the guys had to park out near the main road.
Al (W4ALR) has a goal the Silent Key board and the past President boards should be updated. Its valuable club history and we should get them up to date. Chuck (N4CMJ) said he would volunteer to see about getting the boards updated. John (W8MCE) and Dave (KR4OW) were asked if they could get any historical info for the update.
Carl (K8BBT) said he has a friend on Pine Island with a turnkey ham radio house, including a 30 foot tower. W4/GU0ALD is selling it for apparently around $500,000.
Testing the team came up here every month, faithfully, mostly having coffee and waiting on customers. Not very much testing. With the new changes, were likely to have more customers this year. Before the changes involving Morse code came up, we were going to do testing on an appointment basis, but now we really need to rethink what and how were going to do it. The third Saturday of January well have testing again (thats the 20th of January). We use W5YI testing and think we have enough examiners at the moment, but anyone else interested please contact Paul (K3NON). Examiners need to be registered with the W5YI organization.
Paul (K3NON) pointed out the Orlando Hamcation is scheduled February 9 11. We share in the money collected for testing at the hamfest. Those listing LARA on their tests help us get some of the money collected. There are morning and afternoon (appointment only!) tests are the Hamcation. These tests are under the ARRL organization. John (W8KCE) said he thinks there are limits for the tests rumors are the numbers are 25 only for each testing session (Feb 10).
Strait (KT4YA) asked if anyone wanted to discuss the recent FCC decision to eliminate the testing requirements for Morse code. Its up to those who really care about the hobby to train and encourage those who do want to learn, regardless of the new requirements. We may suddenly have a lot of new hams on HF. Can we, as a group, get together some teaching classes for the various license levels? Dave (KR4OW) already has publications from the ARRL. Al (W4ALR) says we need to take the next level and get a group together and a schedule. KR4OW, KT4YA, K8BBT, N4PJ, K4DDR, KE4WBI will be the new teaching committee.
Herb (KF4WW) reminded members we also need to be aware of BPL issues. We still need to challenge it when it creates problems for us. Doug (K4DDR) pointed out that many of the utilities who have looked at it have decided it isnt worth it, but there are still some other companies out there trying to institute BPL.
SUNSHINE REPORT: None

ARES/RACES: (Len) W2LG had a question regarding ARES/RACES. We no longer have any IDs for RACES, they are generally called by the county government. New laws pertaining to RACES no longer allow plain old volunteers, they need to be certified. The county has gotten very tight about who is going to do what, who gets into the shelters, etc. Background checks are run by the county and when there is a disaster callout, youre covered by Workers Compensation. Thats one of the major benefits by being registered.
HAMFEST REPORT: $657.34 income from the hamfest building rental was $85 and $192 grand prize. Dave (KR4OW) donated the building rental fee for the club.
